ASFA Equity Committee

About the Committee

The Equity Committee conducts and monitors campus and community activities related to GBV and equity related issues such as racism, ableism, transmisia, homomisia, classism, colonialism. The committee will be a key body to help ASFA achieve goals developed within the Policy on Harassment, Discrimination and Violence through their review of ongoing primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and educational initiatives at Concordia University. This committee will gather this information alongside existing campus climate surveys to inform itself of the conditions on campus regarding discrimination, harassment and violence. This committee will seek resources internally and externally to perform an audit of the campus climate if it deems it necessary to complete its objectives. The committee will be mandated to deliver an Action Plan on ASFA Achieving Equity 2023 - 2025 that will highlight its short-term, and long-term goals, and could be utilized by ASFA and Concordia University as a blueprint or framework on fighting harassment, discrimination and violence in the Concordia University community.

Meet the 2023/24 Equity Committee

  • Yordanos

    Hey!

My name is Yordanos, or yoyo for short and I'm a 4th year sociology major and education minor at Concordia University. I’ve always had a love for sci-fi futurism and its commentary on sustainability, surveillance and social constructs, while having cool visuals. I hope to bring that level of cool introspection through the methods anti-oppression training that evokes conversations we might often avoid until it's screened right in front of us.

  • Tyler

Hello, my name is Tyler! I am a 3rd-year undergraduate student in the Human Relations program, a competitive badminton athlete/coach, and a lover of all things coffee! Growing up in a predominantly White environment as a Filipino adoptee, I experienced my fair share of discrimination while searching to establish my own sense of identity. As someone interested in human dynamics, I hope to raise awareness about all the shapes and sizes that oppression can take on as well as the tools and resources that are available to those in need. Through my role as a facilitator with the Equity Committee, I want to continue developing my own mindful practices while making meaningful connections along the way.

  • Tania

My mission is to create a culture of care and safety at Concordia where all students from all walks of life feel heard and seen. I am a black disabled woman who feels compelled to do the work in order to achieve unity and advocate for everyone’s rights. I am driven to do anti-oppression work because it is my reality and I want to exist in world where my blackness can simply just be.

  • Beza

Hi, I’m Beza! I’m a fourth-year chemistry student and I’ve been part of the equity committee since it started in 2021. Anti-o work is really interesting to me because we need to peel back so many layers of ourselves to learn how prejudice develops/manifests itself, and doing this work has taught me a lot about how to relate to other people. I hope to give people the tools to reflect on their biases, recognize when harmful situations occur, and advocate for themselves and their peers.

  • Marcos

Hello, my name is Marcos and I am excited to be joining the equity committee as a workshop facilitator! Originally a settler on the unceded traditional territories of the Lkwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples (Victoria, B.C), I moved to Montreal in 2021 and am currently heading into my third year of psychology at Concordia. I am passionate about anti-racism, harm reduction, as well as 2SLGBTQ+ rights. My goals for my time with ASFA are to push the boundaries of what we consider to be anti-oppression work at an institutional level. As someone who owes a great deal of their life to the teachings of the communities that I was surrounded by growing up and the wisdom of the elders who cared for me, I am hoping to re-center community and incorporate these teachings into my role here at ASFA. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if you need someone to talk to! <3
